Salary to Hourly Calculator
Convert an annual salary to an hourly rate, or an hourly rate to an annual salary, using your own hours per week and weeks per year.
How to convert salary to hourly pay
Divide your annual salary by the number of hours you are paid for in a year. Paid hours in a year are your hours per week multiplied by your weeks per year:
- Paid hours per year = hours per week × weeks per year
- Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ paid hours per year
For a full-time job of 40 hours a week for all 52 weeks of the year, that is 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours, so a salary of $52,000 works out to $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00 an hour. On a 37.5-hour week the same year has 1,950 paid hours, and a $60,000 salary is about $30.77 an hour.
This salary to hourly calculator also works the other way round: choose Hourly to salary above to start from an hourly rate. Every hour is treated the same. Hours over 40 are not paid as overtime here — the Hourly Paycheck Calculator handles overtime.
How to convert hourly pay to annual salary
Multiply your hourly rate by your hours per week, then by the weeks you are paid for in a year:
- Annual salary = hourly rate × hours per week × weeks per year
At $25 an hour for 40 hours a week and 52 weeks a year, that is $25 × 40 × 52 = $52,000 a year. A few more examples at 40 hours a week and 52 weeks a year, before taxes and deductions:
| Hourly rate | Weekly | Annual salary |
|---|---|---|
| $15.00 | $600 | $31,200 |
| $20.00 | $800 | $41,600 |
| $25.00 | $1,000 | $52,000 |
| $30.00 | $1,200 | $62,400 |
| $40.00 | $1,600 | $83,200 |
| $50.00 | $2,000 | $104,000 |
Fewer hours a week or fewer paid weeks a year lower the annual figure in the same proportion. Enter your own schedule above to see yours.
Salary and hourly pay equivalents
The converter also divides the annual figure evenly into other periods, so you can compare a salary with a wage however it is quoted:
- Monthly = annual ÷ 12
- Semimonthly (twice a month) = annual ÷ 24
- Biweekly (every two weeks) = annual ÷ 26
- Weekly = annual ÷ 52
From $52,000 a year that is $4,333.33 a month, $2,166.67 twice a month, $2,000 every two weeks and $1,000 a week. These are equivalents, not a payroll schedule. Your employer’s paydays, paid holidays and rounding decide what each paycheck actually says.
How weeks worked affect the conversion
Weeks per year starts at 52, which means you are paid for every week of the year — including paid holidays and paid vacation. Lower it only for weeks you are not paid for, such as unpaid time off or a job that pauses for part of the year. You can enter any number of weeks from 1 to 52.
Working 40 hours a week for 50 paid weeks instead of 52 gives 2,000 paid hours rather than 2,080. That changes the answer in both directions:
- Salary to hourly: $52,000 ÷ 2,000 = $26.00 an hour, up from $25.00, because the same salary is earned in fewer hours.
- Hourly to salary: $25 × 40 × 50 = $50,000 a year, down from $52,000, because there are fewer paid hours.
With fewer than 52 weeks, a week you work pays more than the weekly equivalent. At $26.00 an hour for 40 hours, each of the 50 weeks pays $1,040, while the weekly equivalent spreads $52,000 across all 52 weeks of the year: $1,000. The result shows both, labeled so they are not confused.
Gross pay vs take-home pay
Every figure on this page is gross pay: what you earn before federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, state and local taxes and deductions such as retirement contributions or health premiums. What reaches your bank account is lower.
To estimate take-home pay, use the US Paycheck Calculator for a salary or the Hourly Paycheck Calculator for an hourly wage. Both work out each tax for your state and pay frequency.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert my salary to an hourly rate?
Divide your annual salary by your paid hours in a year, which are your hours per week multiplied by your weeks per year. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, a year has 2,080 paid hours, so $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00 an hour.
How do I convert an hourly rate to an annual salary?
Multiply your hourly rate by your hours per week and by your weeks per year. At $25 an hour for 40 hours a week and 52 weeks a year, $25 × 40 × 52 = $52,000 a year.
For a quick estimate at 40 hours a week, double the hourly rate and add three zeros: $25 an hour is roughly $50,000 a year. That shortcut counts 2,000 hours instead of 2,080, so the full figure is a little higher.
How many work hours are in a year?
A full-time schedule of 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 paid hours a year. A 37.5-hour week is 1,950 hours, and 40 hours a week for 50 paid weeks is 2,000 hours. Paid holidays and paid vacation are still paid hours, so they stay in the count; only unpaid time off comes out of it.
Is the conversion before or after taxes?
Before. The converter works with gross pay, before taxes and deductions, so the hourly rate and the salary are the figures an employer quotes, not what reaches your bank account. For take-home pay, use the US Paycheck Calculator for a salary or the Hourly Paycheck Calculator for an hourly wage.
How does unpaid time off change the conversion?
Enter fewer weeks per year. Converting a salary, fewer paid hours raise the hourly equivalent: $52,000 over 50 weeks of 40 hours is $26.00 an hour rather than $25.00. Converting an hourly rate, fewer paid weeks lower the annual figure: $25 an hour for 50 weeks is $50,000 rather than $52,000. Paid time off does not change anything, so leave weeks per year at 52 if all your time off is paid.
Is biweekly pay the same as semimonthly pay?
No. Biweekly pay arrives every two weeks, which is 26 paychecks a year. Semimonthly pay arrives twice a month, which is 24 paychecks a year. The same $52,000 salary is $2,000 a paycheck biweekly but $2,166.67 semimonthly, because the year is split 26 ways rather than 24.
Does CalcPaid save the salary or wage I enter?
No. The conversion happens in your browser. Your salary, hourly rate, hours and weeks are never sent to a server, never written to a URL, never saved in cookies or browser storage, and never shared with an analytics or advertising service. Copy and Share hand over the result as text only when you press them.
