California Paycheck Calculator
Estimate your take-home pay in California after federal taxes, Social Security, Medicare and state taxes.
About this California paycheck calculator
This is the CalcPaid paycheck calculator with California already selected. Enter your pay and how often you are paid, and it estimates your 2026 take-home pay after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, California income tax and California State Disability Insurance (SDI).
It runs the same calculation as the US Paycheck Calculator. If you work in a different state, choose it in the calculator above.
Everything is calculated in your browser. Your figures are never sent to a server, written to the address bar or stored. The site uses Google Analytics to count visits, which sees that this page was opened, not what you typed into it. The privacy page has the detail.
What the calculator applies for California
- California income tax is progressive, with rates from 1% to 13.3%. The top rate includes California’s 1% Mental Health Services Tax on taxable income above $1 million.
- SDI is withheld at 1.3% with no wage cap. California removed the annual SDI taxable wage limit beginning in 2024, so SDI does not stop once your pay passes a set amount, which is why high earners in California see a larger deduction than the income tax alone would suggest.
- An HSA does not reduce your California tax. California taxes HSA contributions even though the federal government does not, so an HSA lowers your federal income tax but not your California income tax or your SDI.
- SDI can apply to a broader wage base than Social Security and Medicare. For paycheck deductions, the difference is HSA contributions: they reduce the wages Social Security and Medicare are charged on, but not your SDI wages. 401(k) contributions reduce neither. Health, dental, vision and health FSA contributions made through a Section 125 cafeteria plan reduce both.
- The 2026 figures are carried forward. California publishes its 2026 brackets, standard deduction and credits late in the year. Until then this calculator uses the 2025 amounts, which is what the state’s own 2026 estimated-tax instructions tell taxpayers to do.
An estimate, not your pay stub
The result is an annualized estimate rather than an exact payroll withholding calculation. Your employer’s payroll system works pay period by pay period, using the withholding forms you filed and your year-to-date pay — information this calculator does not have — so the figure on a given paycheck can fall either side of the one shown here.
Your pay stub is the authority on what was actually withheld, and your tax return is the authority on what you finally owe for the year.
