Michigan Paycheck Calculator

Estimate your take-home pay in Michigan after federal taxes, Social Security, Medicare and state taxes.

About this Michigan paycheck calculator

This is the CalcPaid paycheck calculator with Michigan already selected. Enter your pay and how often you are paid, and it estimates your 2026 take-home pay after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and Michigan income tax, with a city income tax if you choose a city or enter a rate.

It runs the same calculation as the US Paycheck Calculator. If you work in a different state, choose it in the calculator above.

Everything is calculated in your browser. Your figures are never sent to a server, written to the address bar or stored. The site uses Google Analytics to count visits, which sees that this page was opened, not what you typed into it. The privacy page has the detail.

What the calculator applies for Michigan

  • Michigan income tax is a flat 4.25%. The same rate applies to all of your Michigan taxable income, whatever your filing status.
  • Pre-tax deductions lower your Michigan wages. Health, dental and vision premiums, FSA and HSA contributions, traditional 401(k) contributions and any other pre-tax deduction you enter all come off your pay before Michigan tax is worked out.
  • An exemption comes off next. The calculator subtracts no standard deduction for Michigan. It subtracts an exemption of $5,900, or $11,800 if you are married filing jointly, and applies the 4.25% to what is left.
  • A city income tax is added only if you choose it. About two dozen Michigan cities levy their own income tax. The calculator’s “City or county” field starts on “No local income tax” and lists Detroit at 2.4%, Grand Rapids at 1.5%, Highland Park at 2%, Saginaw at 1.5%, Lansing at 1% and Flint at 1%. If you choose one, the calculator charges its rate on your Michigan wages after pre-tax deductions, before the exemption comes off, and shows it under the city’s name.
  • The listed rate is charged in full. CalcPaid’s data notes that non-residents who work in those cities generally pay half the resident rate. The calculator does not halve the rate: if you choose a city, it charges the rate listed. If you pay a different rate, choose “Somewhere else — enter the rate” and type it.
  • No single local rate applies across Michigan. The calculator applies no city income tax unless you choose a city or enter a rate. For a city that is not listed, choose “Somewhere else — enter the rate” and type its rate: the calculator charges it on the same Michigan wages and shows it as local income tax.
  • Nothing else is added for Michigan. The calculator takes out no Michigan payroll contribution and no local income tax other than the one you choose or enter.
  • These figures have not been confirmed against a 2026 agency document. CalcPaid’s data names the Michigan Department of Treasury and the Tax Foundation as its sources, but records the Michigan figures as not yet confirmed. It names no source for the six city rates.

An estimate, not your pay stub

The result is an annualized estimate rather than an exact payroll withholding calculation. Your employer’s payroll system works pay period by pay period, using the withholding forms you filed and your year-to-date pay — information this calculator does not have — so the figure on a given paycheck can fall either side of the one shown here.

Your pay stub is the authority on what was actually withheld, and your tax return is the authority on what you finally owe for the year.
