Iowa Paycheck Calculator

Estimate your take-home pay in Iowa after federal taxes, Social Security, Medicare and state taxes.

About this Iowa paycheck calculator

This is the CalcPaid paycheck calculator with Iowa already selected. Enter your pay and how often you are paid, and it estimates your 2026 take-home pay after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and Iowa income tax.

It runs the same calculation as the US Paycheck Calculator. If you work in a different state, choose it in the calculator above.

Everything is calculated in your browser. Your figures are never sent to a server, written to the address bar or stored. The site uses Google Analytics to count visits, which sees that this page was opened, not what you typed into it. The privacy page has the detail.

What the calculator applies for Iowa

  • Iowa income tax is a flat 3.8%. The same rate applies to all of your Iowa taxable income, whatever your filing status.
  • Pre-tax deductions lower your Iowa wages. Health, dental and vision premiums, FSA and HSA contributions, traditional 401(k) contributions and any other pre-tax deduction you enter all come off your pay before Iowa tax is worked out.
  • A standard deduction comes off next. The calculator uses the federal standard deduction amounts for Iowa: $16,100 if you are single or married filing separately, $32,200 if you are married filing jointly and $24,150 if you are head of household. It then applies the 3.8% to what is left.
  • A personal exemption credit comes off the tax itself. After working out the 3.8%, the calculator subtracts a personal exemption credit of $40 if you are single, married filing separately or head of household, and $80 if you are married filing jointly. The credit lowers the Iowa tax, not the income it is charged on.
  • No Iowa payroll contribution, and no city or county tax unless you enter one. The calculator takes out no Iowa payroll contribution and lists no Iowa city or county income tax. Its “City or county” field starts on “No local income tax”. If you choose “Somewhere else — enter the rate” and type a rate, the calculator charges that rate on your Iowa wages after pre-tax deductions and shows it as local income tax.
  • The school district surtax is not included. Some Iowa school districts levy a surtax on the Iowa tax you owe. The calculator does not work that surtax out. A rate typed into the local field is charged on wages, not on tax owed, so it does not reproduce the surtax.
  • These figures have not been confirmed against a 2026 agency document. The 3.8% rate, the standard deduction amounts and the exemption credit come from reputable secondary sources and have not yet been re-checked against a 2026 Iowa Department of Revenue document.

An estimate, not your pay stub

The result is an annualized estimate rather than an exact payroll withholding calculation. Your employer’s payroll system works pay period by pay period, using the withholding forms you filed and your year-to-date pay — information this calculator does not have — so the figure on a given paycheck can fall either side of the one shown here.

Your pay stub is the authority on what was actually withheld, and your tax return is the authority on what you finally owe for the year.
