Montana Paycheck Calculator

Estimate your take-home pay in Montana after federal taxes, Social Security, Medicare and state taxes.

About this Montana paycheck calculator

This is the CalcPaid paycheck calculator with Montana already selected. Enter your pay and how often you are paid, and it estimates your 2026 take-home pay after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and Montana income tax.

It runs the same calculation as the US Paycheck Calculator. If you work in a different state, choose it in the calculator above.

Everything is calculated in your browser. Your figures are never sent to a server, written to the address bar or stored. The site uses Google Analytics to count visits, which sees that this page was opened, not what you typed into it. The privacy page has the detail.

What the calculator applies for Montana

  • Montana income tax has two rates. If you are single or married filing separately, the calculator charges 4.7% on the first $47,500 of Montana taxable income and 5.65% on everything above $47,500. If you are married filing jointly, the 5.65% starts at $95,000, and if you are head of household, at $71,250.
  • Pre-tax deductions lower your Montana wages. Health, dental and vision premiums, FSA and HSA contributions, traditional 401(k) contributions and any other pre-tax deduction you enter all come off your pay before Montana tax is worked out.
  • Montana starts from federal taxable income. Montana works out its tax on federal taxable income, so the federal standard deduction has already come off: $16,100 if you are single or married filing separately, $32,200 if you are married filing jointly and $24,150 if you are head of household. The calculator assumes you take that standard deduction rather than itemizing. Montana no longer has a standard deduction or personal exemption of its own, so nothing more comes off for Montana. If you enter qualified tips or overtime under Advanced options, the federal deduction for them is part of working out federal taxable income, so the same amount comes off Montana taxable income too, after the yearly caps and the gradual reduction at higher incomes that apply on your federal return. The calculator then applies the rates to what is left and takes no credit off the tax.
  • Nothing else is added for Montana. The calculator takes out no Montana payroll contribution and no city or county income tax.
  • Checked at the source. CalcPaid’s 2026 data records the Montana rates and the incomes at which each starts as checked against Montana law as amended by HB 337 and the Montana Department of Revenue’s table of the 2026 rates. It records the use of the federal standard deduction as checked against Montana law and the Department’s statement that Montana taxable income starts from federal taxable income, with no Montana standard deduction or exemption of its own. It records the federal deductions for qualified tips and overtime as checked against the Department’s Form 2 instructions, which include them in Montana taxable income, and their amounts as checked against the IRS’s Schedule 1-A.

An estimate, not your pay stub

The result is an annualized estimate rather than an exact payroll withholding calculation. Your employer’s payroll system works pay period by pay period, using the withholding forms you filed and your year-to-date pay — information this calculator does not have — so the figure on a given paycheck can fall either side of the one shown here.

Your pay stub is the authority on what was actually withheld, and your tax return is the authority on what you finally owe for the year.
